Single item junk pickup in Pensacola is one of the most common requests we get, and one of the most misunderstood. People assume a hauler will not bother with just one couch, so the couch sits on the porch for a month. Sometimes curbside bulk pickup is the right answer for one item. Sometimes it is not. Here is how to tell, and how to make a one piece pickup quick.
Why many haulers set a minimum
Every trip has costs that do not shrink with the load: fuel, drive time, loading and the landfill's own minimum. Escambia County's posted fee schedule, for example, has an $11.64 minimum at Perdido Landfill no matter how small the load, and Santa Rosa's Central Landfill lists a $10 minimum for all transactions. Because of that, many haulers build a minimum into their pricing, and some only take full or half loads.
Pelican Haul-Off treats a single item as a normal job. One couch or one mattress is fine. We do not publish prices, but we text you a price for that one piece before anything is loaded. If you want to understand how quotes are built, our post on junk removal cost in Pensacola breaks it down.
When curbside bulk pickup is the better call
If you can wait and the item can sit outside, bulk pickup is often the simplest path for a single piece.
- ECUA customers can request bulk pickup online or in the MyECUA app by 1:59 p.m. the day before their collection day. ECUA takes general furniture like couches, desks, chairs and dressers, one pile per week, and the item goes to the curb the night before. Our ECUA bulk pickup guide has the full rules.
- City of Pensacola sanitation customers use Special Collection, scheduled by phone or online form. The city charges a fee, and says scheduling ahead costs significantly less than unscheduled collection.
- Neighborhood cleanups in Escambia County and the City of Pensacola take furniture and mattresses at the curb on set dates, if your street happens to be in the next one.
When bulk pickup doesn't fit
A single item is often the exact case where waiting for the bulk truck does not work:
- You need it gone now. A new mattress is arriving tomorrow and the old one has nowhere to go.
- It can't sit outside. Afternoon storms soak a mattress or upholstered chair at the curb, and a wet mattress is heavier and messier for everyone.
- HOA or neighborhood rules. Some communities restrict how long items can sit at the curb. Check yours before you drag something out a day early.
- Apartments and condos. If your unit does not have its own curbside service, there may be no curb to use. Ask the office what is allowed before leaving anything by the dumpster.
- It's upstairs. Bulk pickup is curbside. Someone still has to get a sleeper sofa down from the second floor.
- It's not a bulk item. ECUA does not take construction debris, remodeling materials, carpet or items that need special handling.
For a mattress in particular, our mattress disposal guide compares bulk pickup, the landfill and haul away.
How to prep one item for a fast pickup
A single item pickup should take minutes. You can help:
- Clear the path. Move rugs, plants and anything between the item and the door.
- Measure tight spots. If a couch came in through a door, it can go out the same way, but recliners and sectionals sometimes need to come apart.
- Take off loose parts. Remove cushions, legs that unscrew and glass tops if you can.
- Bag a mattress if you suspect pests. Tell us in your text so we can plan for it.
- Empty drawers. A dresser full of clothes is a much heavier dresser.
- Send one good photo. Step back so the whole item and the space around it are in frame.
Text one photo, get one price
Text a photo of the item to (850) 273-8546 with your ZIP code and whether there are stairs. We text back a price and the soonest pickup time, and the price is confirmed with you before anything is loaded. Same day pickup happens when available, so text early in the day for the best chance. Your first pickup is $20 off when you mention the website. More about how our junk hauling works.
