Move out junk removal in Pensacola is mostly a timing problem. Curbside bulk pickup runs on a weekly schedule, landfills keep set hours, and charities book pickups days out, while your lease end, inspection or report date does not move. The fix is to decide early what goes where, then use a hauler only for what the schedules cannot catch. Here is how that plays out for renters, landlords and military families.
Renters: clear it before the walk through
Most of what renters leave behind is predictable: a mattress that was not worth moving, a futon, a bookshelf that will not survive another move, and a closet of boxes. Work backward from your inspection date.
Two weeks out. Decide what is not coming. Donate furniture in good shape now, because charity pickups book ahead and they turn down torn or stained pieces. Our furniture donation guide lists what each local charity accepts.
One week out. If you live in a house served by ECUA, request bulk pickup online or in the MyECUA app by 1:59 p.m. the day before your collection day. ECUA takes one pile per week, up to 6 feet wide, 6 feet deep and 6 feet high, and items go to the curb the night before. Inside city limits? City of Pensacola sanitation customers schedule bulky items through Special Collection by phone or online form. The city charges a fee, and it says the fee is significantly lower when you schedule ahead than for unscheduled collection. See our City of Pensacola bulk trash pickup post for details.
Apartments. Complexes often have their own rules for large items. Ask the office before you leave a couch by the dumpster, and check your lease for anything it says about items left behind.
The last two days. Anything still there after the bulk window gets hauled or comes with you.
Landlords: after a tenant leaves
When a tenant moves out and leaves furniture and boxes behind, be careful before throwing anything away. Florida Statutes section 715.104 sets out a written notice process for personal property left on the premises after a tenancy ends. The notice has to describe the property and give a deadline to claim it of not fewer than 10 days after personal delivery, or not fewer than 15 days after mailing. Read the statute or talk with an attorney about your situation before disposing of anything that might still belong to someone.
Once the property is clearly yours to deal with, the cleanup is the same as any other: donate what is usable, take paint and cleaning chemicals to the county household hazardous waste drop off, and get the leftover furniture, mattresses and junk out so you can turn the unit.
PCS moves: NAS Pensacola, Corry Station and Whiting Field
Military families moving on orders from NAS Pensacola, Corry Station or Whiting Field near Milton have a hard deadline and a lot of moving parts. A few habits help:
- Sort early. Anything you will not want at the next duty station should be gone before the packers arrive, so it does not get packed, counted and shipped.
- Keep hazardous items out of the move. Propane tanks, gas cans, paint and chemicals can go to a free county drop off. Escambia County takes household hazardous waste at Perdido Landfill, and Santa Rosa County runs its center at the Central Landfill in Milton.
- Plan for the last few days. Bulk pickup will not line up with your final checkout, so leave room for one haul of whatever is left after the truck pulls away.
