Who picks up trash in Baton Rouge
- Curbside garbage collection in Baton Rouge is provided by Republic Services under contract with the City-Parish.[1]
- The City-Parish Department of Environmental Services runs the solid waste program, including garbage collection and the North Landfill.[1]
- City-Parish collection rules cover single family homes and small multifamily buildings in the parish, but not the cities of Baker and Zachary.[4]

Bulk trash pickup in Baton Rouge
- Your solid waste user fee includes one out of cart collection each week, which is when bulky items and bagged yard waste are picked up.[4]
- Bulk waste means items that do not fit in a cart, such as furniture, mattresses and box springs, carpet, bicycles and toilets.[6]
- A maximum of three bulk items are collected per pickup from each home.[6]
- Up to three pieces of furniture are collected on regular trash routes.[6]
- Yard waste must be bagged or bundled, with a maximum of 10 bags or bundles per service day and no bag or bundle over 40 pounds.[6]
- Tree limbs must be under 6 feet long and no more than 6 inches across, bundled, and placed near but not in the road.[6]
- Republic Services will not pick up hazardous material, lot clearing debris, construction or demolition debris, remodeling materials, concrete, bricks, roofing, paint, batteries, oil or chemicals.[6]
- Republic Services will not pick up appliances containing Freon, but you may call to arrange pickup of other appliances.[6]
- Construction and demolition debris can be taken to the North Landfill for a fee.[6]
- When hiring contractors, the City-Parish advises making them responsible for removing all waste from the site.[6]
- Out of cart items may not be set on cul de sacs, common areas, or in front of vacant property.[4]
Baton Rouge trash pickup schedule
- Find your collection schedule online at brla.gov/mgs.[4]
- Garbage carts are collected twice a week, with collections running between 4 a.m. and 8 p.m.[4]
- If your cart is not serviced in that window, leave it at the curb for service the next morning and contact 311.[4]
- Garbage and recycling carts must be at the curb by 4 a.m. on your scheduled service day.[8]
- Keep carts at least 3 feet from other objects, including other carts.[4]
- Only official East Baton Rouge Parish carts are serviced.[4]
- Cart lids must be closed, overflowing carts are not collected, and vehicles blocking the street should be moved on collection day.[8]
- New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day are the collection contract holidays.[1]
- If a holiday falls on your collection day, service moves to the next scheduled collection day unless residents are told otherwise.[1]
- City-Parish guidelines say residents with extra garbage on an ongoing basis may request an additional cart for a monthly charge of $7.00.[6]

Landfills and transfer stations near Baton Rouge
Landfill
East Baton Rouge Parish North Landfill
Run by: The North Landfill is managed by the City-Parish Department of Environmental Services, with day to day operations run by contractor Waste Management.[1]
Address: The North Landfill is at 16001 Samuels Road in Zachary.[1]
Hours: Garbage and trash drop off runs 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.[2]

Fees
- The landfill is free for East Baton Rouge Parish residents bringing their own garbage and trash with proof of residence such as a driver's license or water bill.[2]
- The fee schedule exempts parish residents who are not hauling for hire and are disposing of residential trash or garbage.[5]
- Effective January 1, 2026, out of parish garbage is charged $2.40 per 100 pounds.[5]
- Effective January 1, 2026, commercial garbage from inside the parish is charged $2.20 per 100 pounds.[5]
- Tires are charged $6.00 per 100 pounds, or a $7.00 surcharge for each undeclared tire.[5]
- Credit card payments carry a 2.75% processing fee.[2]
Accepted
- The landfill accepts residential and commercial solid waste plus bulky recyclables such as automobile tires, refrigerators, freezers, stoves, water tanks and washing machines.[2]
- Refrigerators and freezers must be emptied of food, have their doors removed, and have all refrigerants removed.[6]
- Each resident may dispose of up to four tires per year, and tires must be removed from rims.[6]
- Scrap metal and appliances without Freon are accepted at the North Landfill.[6]
Not accepted
- The landfill does not accept hazardous waste, PCB contaminated materials, asbestos contaminated materials, liquid waste or industrial waste.[2]
- Medical waste, industrial waste, paints, paint thinners, liquids, solid chemicals and incinerator ash are not accepted without prior written approval.[6]
- Commercial and industrial sized tires are not accepted.[6]
Rules
- Private citizens and customers without a landfill account are served 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays.[2]
- On Saturday, private citizens and customers without a landfill account are served 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.[2]
- The landfill takes checks drawn on local banks and credit cards only; cash is no longer accepted.[6]
- Proper personal protective equipment is required to enter the landfill.[2]
- You must unload your own waste.[6]
- The North Landfill is closed on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.[2]

Starwood Residential Self-Service Collection Facility
Run by: The Starwood self service facility is part of the City-Parish solid waste program run by the Department of Environmental Services.[1]

Hours: Hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.[3]
Fees
- Parish residents can drop off non perishable household waste at no charge with a valid Louisiana driver's license or utility bill showing a parish address.[7]
Accepted
- Accepted items include household bulky waste like furniture, bicycles and toys, plus scrap metal and drained auto parts.[3]
- Tree trimmings and yard waste are accepted, but not whole trees, large tree parts or stumps.[3]
- Homeowner generated construction debris such as flooring from a single room, toilets, wood and fence sections is accepted within limits.[3]
Not accepted
- Food waste and dead animals are not accepted because the site is not authorized for perishable waste.[3]
- White goods, batteries, electronic waste, tires, uncrushed or dirty metal drums and friable asbestos are not accepted.[7]
Rules
- Residents must show a driver's license or utility bill to verify residence before unloading.[3]
- People who live outside East Baton Rouge Parish may not use the facility.[7]
- Loads must come in pickup trucks, passenger vehicles or small trailers, and the facility cannot accommodate dump trailers.[3]
- Depending on space and vehicle size, the attendant may send you to the North Landfill instead.[3]
Hazardous waste disposal in Baton Rouge
- Household hazardous waste such as paint, chemicals, thinner, batteries and electronics may not go in your curbside cart.[8]
- The City-Parish collects household hazardous materials at semi annual collection days in the spring and fall rather than at a permanent drop off site.[9]
- The fall 2026 collection day is Saturday, November 21, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the LSU Touchdown Village Parking Lot.[9]
- The spring 2026 collection day was held Saturday, May 9 at LSU Lot 406 off Skip Bertman Drive.[10]
- Empty or dried out latex paint cans can go in the trash.[9]
- Save paint cans more than half full for the household hazardous waste collection day.[9]
- Habitat ReStore accepts full or partly full cans of latex paint or stain and full cans of oil paint year round.[9]
- Small empty propane cylinders holding less than 4 pounds can go in your regular garbage can.[9]

Check with the city first
- Landfill fees are set by Metropolitan Council resolution and change, so confirm current rates and accepted payment before you haul a load.
- The weekday hours for private citizens at the North Landfill are shorter than the posted gate hours, so plan to arrive between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Household hazardous materials days happen only twice a year, so confirm the date, location and accepted items on the City-Parish recycling page.
- Residents of Baker and Zachary have their own collection service, so check with your city if you live there.
