An estate cleanout in Pensacola usually lands on a family at a hard time, often with relatives flying in for a few days and a house full of decades of belongings. The work goes faster and with fewer regrets when it happens in a set order: protect the important things first, let family choose, sell, donate, and only then dispose of what is left. Here is that order, with local options for each step.
One honest note up front: Pelican Haul-Off does not do whole house cleanouts. We are a small local team with a pickup truck and trailer. Where we help is the end of the process, hauling the leftover furniture, mattresses and small loads after the family and the sale are done.
What is an estate cleanout?
It is the process of emptying a home after someone passes away or moves into care, so the property can be sold, rented or returned. It covers everything inside: keepsakes, paperwork, furniture, clothing, garage contents and whatever is in the attic. Some families do it themselves over several weekends. Others hire estate sale companies or full service cleanout crews for parts of it.
How do estate cleanouts work? A six step plan
1. Secure papers and valuables first
Before anyone starts filling bags, walk the house and pull out anything that matters legally or financially: wills, deeds, titles, bank and insurance statements, tax records, keys, jewelry and photos. Check drawers, closets, books and coat pockets. Once the trash pile starts, it is easy for an envelope to disappear into it.
2. Let family choose
Give each person a way to mark what they want, like colored tape or a shared list, and a date by which unclaimed items move to the next step. Deciding the order of choosing ahead of time avoids a lot of hard conversations.
3. Hold a sale, or sell the best pieces
An estate sale or online listings can turn furniture, tools and collectibles into money for the estate, and it moves a large volume of items out the door. Anything that does not sell becomes the donation pile.
4. Donate what is still usable
Local charities post their own rules, and they are strict about condition. Pensacola Habitat for Humanity ReStore offers free donation pickup and takes furniture, appliances and building materials in good condition, but not torn, stained or soiled items. Waterfront Thrift also offers free pickup for gently used furniture and household goods. Neither takes used mattresses. Our furniture donation guide compares the options.
5. Handle hazardous items separately
Garages and sheds in older homes often hold old paint, pesticides, cleaning chemicals, motor oil and gas cans. These should not go in the trash or with a hauler. Escambia County residents can take them to the household hazardous waste drop off at Perdido Landfill at no charge (residential waste only), and Santa Rosa County runs a free center at its Central Landfill in Milton. Escambia's drop off does not take medication or medical waste. Our household hazardous waste guide lists the limits.
6. Dispose of the leftovers
This is where families often run out of time. Curbside bulk pickup helps but moves slowly for a full house: ECUA takes one bulk pile per week, up to 6 feet in each direction. Escambia County's landfill fee schedule limits mattresses to 4 per household. If the house is in an area with an upcoming neighborhood cleanup, that can take a big share of furniture and junk in one morning.
Where we fit in
After the family picks, the sale and the donation pickup, there are usually a few rooms of things nobody wants: a worn sofa, the mattresses, a broken recliner, boxes from the garage. That is the part Pelican Haul-Off handles well. We haul couches, chairs, tables, dressers, bed frames, mattresses and box springs, garage clutter and other small loads.
What we do not do: whole house cleanouts, and we do not take concrete, roofing or dirt. If the job is the entire contents of a home, you will want a full service crew for that part, and we are glad to take the leftover pieces after. Read more about our junk hauling service.
When the house is down to the leftovers
Text photos of what is left to (850) 273-8546 with the ZIP code and whether there are stairs. We text back a price and the soonest pickup time, and the price is confirmed with you before anything is loaded. Same day pickup is possible when available, which helps when family is only in town for a few days. Your first pickup is $20 off when you mention the website.
