Santa Rosa County Central Landfill: A Guide for Milton and Pace Residents

By Pelican Haul-Off ·

The main Santa Rosa County landfill is the Central Landfill at 6337 Da Lisa Road in Milton, run by the county's Environmental Department. If you live in Milton, Pace or anywhere in south Santa Rosa and you are hauling your own junk, this is the county site you will use. The county also runs a smaller landfill in Jay for the north end. Here is what to know before you go, as posted by the county in October 2026. Hours and rates change, so check the county page or call the scale house at 850.981.7135 first.

What goes in each class

The landfill sorts what comes across the scale, and knowing the classes helps you load smart.

  • Class I household garbage: everyday household trash, food containers, diapers, cat litter and empty household chemical containers.
  • Class III: construction and demolition debris such as shingles, plus wood furniture.
  • Recovered materials: metal, masonry and yard waste go to separate areas. Metal debris, such as refrigerators, freezers, stoves, washers and dryers, is charged the Class I rate. Refrigerators and other refrigerant appliances have their own scale house procedures, linked from the county page.
  • Special waste: anything that needs special handling, equipment or labor, including commercial and retail mattress loads, dead animals and oversized loads. It requires county review and a Special Waste Characterization Form before it is accepted.

Asbestos is accepted by appointment only, on Thursdays.

The free household hazardous waste center

At the entrance to the Central Landfill, the county runs a Household Hazardous Waste Center that is free for Santa Rosa County residents, six days a week. You need a photo ID, and business or commercial drop offs are not accepted. Accepted items include paint, stains and solvents, motor oil and filters, gasoline, antifreeze, pesticides and fertilizers, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, fluorescent bulbs, rechargeable and car batteries, aerosol cans, and electronics such as computers, flat screen TVs and cell phones. Older CRT and projection TVs are not accepted.

Per carload limits, as posted: no more than 25 fluorescent bulbs, up to 15 gallons combined of paint, stain or solvents, and up to 10 gallons each of oil, gasoline and antifreeze per week. The county says its south end amnesty day is typically held twice a year, usually in March and October, and it gives away recycled paint free, first come, first served.

Where can I dispose of my mattresses for free in Santa Rosa?

There isn't a standing free option on the landfill's rate page. Commercial and retail mattress loads are classed as special waste, and the page doesn't list a separate residential mattress rate, so call the scale house before you bring one. A few routes are worth checking:

  • City of Milton residents: regular city sanitation lists mattresses and furniture among items it can't pick up, but the city's Community Cleanup accepted furniture and mattresses at the curb on scheduled days in March, April and May 2026.
  • Unincorporated areas like Pace: since March 2025, residents choose their own curbside provider, and the county lists two permitted residential providers. Ask yours whether bulk items are included.
  • Donation: the Pensacola Habitat for Humanity ReStore does not accept used mattresses, and other charities set their own rules.

Our mattress disposal guide goes deeper, and if you are near the Escambia line, the Perdido Landfill guide covers the other county's site.

Skip the scale house

A landfill run makes sense with a truck and a big load. For a couch, a mattress or a garage corner, the truck rental and the drive to Da Lisa Road can cost more than the dump fee. Our where to dump furniture guide compares options, and our junk hauling service covers Milton and Pace.
