Hours, fees and pickup rules change, especially after storms and at the start of a new fiscal year. Every line below links to the official page it came from. Confirm with Mobile or Mobile County before you load the truck.
Who picks up trash in Mobile
- The City of Mobile collects household garbage once a week, based on your home address.[2]
- The city also runs a separate residential trash collection for limbs, furniture and other bulky items every other week.[3]
- Garbage must be bagged and placed inside a city issued garbage cart.[2]

Bulk trash pickup in Mobile
- Mobile defines residential trash for curbside pickup as limbs, old furniture, appliances and junk.[4]
- Each home is limited to about 2 cubic yards of trash, roughly a 3 by 3 by 6 foot pile or 15 bags, every other week.[4]
- Larger amounts can be hauled by the resident to a trash landfill or collected by Public Works for a charge.[4]
- For piles over the limit, call 208-5311 to place a work order requesting a price estimate.[5]
- Putting trash at the curb more than 48 hours before your scheduled pickup day is prohibited and carries a $532 fine and court costs.[4]
- Electronics, appliances, paint, tires or glass mixed into a regular trash pile will cause the whole pile to be skipped.[5]
- To have electronics or an appliance picked up, call 208-5311 and place a work order.[5]
- The city will not pick up refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners or similar items that still contain Freon, oil or gas.[5]
- Household chemicals, paint, construction debris, glass, sinks, bathtubs, HVAC units, sheetrock, insulation and fencing may not be mixed into trash piles.[5]
- If you hire a contractor, the contractor is responsible for removing the debris and taking it to the landfill.[5]
- Tree limbs larger than 12 inches in diameter are not collected as household trash.[5]
- Materials from evictions, commercial projects and commercial businesses are not collected as household trash.[5]
- Trash piles go on the property where the trash came from, as close to the street as possible.[5]
- The city does not pick up tires on residential trash days.[9]
Mobile trash pickup schedule

- The city posts 2026 trash pickup date calendars for North Mobile and South Mobile, and notes the calendar is subject to change.[4]
- Garbage carts must be at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on your regular collection day.[2]
- Only city issued carts are emptied; loose bags, boxes and other items left beside the cart are not collected.[2]
- Each household may have up to two city issued garbage carts.[2]
- Overloaded carts whose lids will not close are not picked up.[2]
- The city does not pick up garbage or trash on listed holidays and publishes a yearly sanitation holiday schedule with makeup days.[6]
- For Thanksgiving 2026 (Thursday, November 26), garbage and trash are closed with Thursday routes made up on Saturday, November 28.[6]

- Mobile's recycling program uses a single stream method, so residents do not need to sort recyclables.[8]

- The city's scrap tire page says H & S Land charges $2.50 a tire, or $12 a cubic yard with a $60 minimum.[9]

- The centers accept household electronics such as telephones, computers, game consoles, cell phones and other small electronics.[8]
Not accepted
- TVs of any kind may not be left at the recycling drop off centers.[8]
- Glass has not been accepted for recycling since April 1, 2024.[8]

Hazardous waste disposal in Mobile
- Mobile handles household hazardous waste through city collection events, which it has hosted since 2022.[10]
- The most recent event listed was Saturday, September 26, 2026, so check the city page for the next one.[10]
- It is against city rules to put hazardous waste, liquid paint, chemicals or batteries in your garbage cart.[2]
- The city suggests drying leftover paint with fast setting concrete mix, sand or cat litter, then putting the closed can in your brown garbage cart.[5]
- Household electronics can be dropped off free at the city's three recycling centers during regular hours.[8]
- Needles, household medical waste and broken glass must go in puncture proof sealed containers or biohazard bags.[5]
- The city recommends hauling no more than eight scrap tires at a time.[9]

- Accepted items include automotive fluids such as motor oil, antifreeze, brake and transmission fluid, gasoline and oil filters.[10]
- Oil and latex paint is accepted up to a limit of 15 gallons.[10]
Not accepted
- Tires, explosives, firearms, pharmaceuticals, medical waste, appliances, electronics and lawn equipment are not accepted.[10]
- Gas cylinders such as acetylene, oxygen, carbon dioxide, refrigerant and helium are not accepted.[10]
Rules
- No registration is needed, but the event is for Mobile residents only and contractors and businesses may not drop off.[10]
Check with the city first
- Landfill hours and payment rules come from the city's landfill list, so call the landfill before you load up.
- Chastang Landfill tipping fees were not posted on any official page we found, so ask about cost when you call.
- The over the limit trash pile charge is quoted per pile, so call Mobile 311 for an estimate before you schedule.
- Holiday makeup days and household hazardous waste event dates change every year, so check the city pages before you set anything out.
