  • Residential service includes weekly collection of garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulk items, with large appliance and electronics pickup by appointment at no additional charge.[2]
  • Starting October 1, 2026, solid waste charges moved from the monthly GRU utility bill to a special assessment on the non ad valorem property tax bill.[3]
  • Annual assessment rates effective October 1, 2026 depend on cart size: $368.18 for a 20 gallon cart, $391.58 for 35 gallons, $436.81 for 64 gallons and $486.73 for 96 gallons.[3]

Gainesville trash pickup schedule

  • Starting Monday, October 5, 2026, about 65 percent of Gainesville households have a new collection day as routes moved to a Monday through Friday schedule.[3]
  • Although the new contract began October 1, 2026, the updated schedule started Monday, October 5.[4]
  • To find your day, enter your address on the City's New Collection Day Map, or call the Solid Waste Division at 352-334-2330.[1]
  • Garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulk items are all collected on the same day for each address, and must be at the curb by 7 a.m.[1]
  • Older collection day maps on some City pages still show the former Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday schedule, so rely on the new lookup map.[5]
  • Put your cart out by 7 a.m. on collection day and bring it in by 9 p.m. that day.[2]
  • Extra garbage that will not fit in your cart must go in Official Yellow Bags, sold at local Publix and Gainesville Ace Hardware stores for $11.25 per pack of five.[2]
  • When a holiday falls on a collection day, pickup is delayed one day for the rest of that week, and a Friday holiday moves collection to Saturday.[3]
  • Yard waste is now limited to six cubic yards per week, in bundles or containers under 40 pounds each.[3]
  • Residents may also take excess garbage to any of the five Alachua County Rural Collection Centers, which are free for county residents but have a daily load limit.[2]

Check with the city first

  • Gainesville changed collection days for about two thirds of homes on October 5, 2026, so check your address on the City's new lookup map even if you knew your old day.
  • Some City pages still show the old Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday maps; trust the new collection day map or call 352-334-2330.
  • There is no public landfill in Alachua County to drive to; household loads go to the Leveda Brown transfer station, and its fees and hours can change, so call ahead.
  • Construction and demolition debris is not accepted at the transfer station or rural collection centers, so ask the county where to take it before hauling.

We left these out because we could not read them on an official page when we checked:

  • Name of the regional landfill in Union County
  • Leveda Brown ZIP code (conflict)
  • Where residents can take construction and demolition debris
  • Rural Collection Center addresses, hours and load limits
  • HHW fee schedule details for businesses
