Who picks up trash in Tallahassee
- The City of Tallahassee is the exclusive provider of garbage collection inside city limits, though recycling and construction and demolition debris are excluded from that exclusive service.[1]
- The city's Waste Management service handles garbage, bulky items, yard waste and recycling for homes and businesses inside city limits.[1]

Bulk trash pickup in Tallahassee
- Bulky items and yard waste are picked up every other week, on your Red or Blue week, on a set day such as Red Monday or Blue Friday.[1]
- Furniture, mattresses and small appliances count as bulky items and are collected at no charge on your Red or Blue week.[2]
- Put bulky items and yard waste at the curb no sooner than the weekend before your pickup date.[1]
- Set bulky items behind the curb in a separate pile from yard waste, clear of obstructions and away from your bins.[2]
- Construction and demolition debris, oversize piles and extra garbage put out between collection days need a paid Special Collection, which you schedule through your utility account.[2]
- To request a residential special pickup, log in to your utility account and open the Requests tab.[3]
- Special pickups cost $110.46 per quarter hour with a $110.46 minimum, and that timed rate does not include travel time.[3]
- Special pickups also carry disposal fees, such as $78.91 per ton for garbage or mixed bulk waste, $50.18 per ton for clean yard waste and $180.00 per ton for tires.[3]
- Allow 3 to 5 business days for a special pickup after you submit the request.[3]
- Large limbs should be under six feet long and no more than four inches across, and yard waste piles should not exceed six feet long, four feet wide and four feet high.[2]
- Electronics such as TVs and computers are collected by request only on Thursdays and must be behind the curb by 6:30 a.m.[2]
- If a bulky item pickup is missed, it is collected on your next scheduled Red or Blue week.[2]
- At the city's Cash for Trash events, held the third Saturday of April and October from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2727 Major James Morgan Jr. Way, customers with active garbage service can drop off bulky items and household hazardous waste and get a $5 utility bill credit.[4]
- Cash for Trash does not accept household garbage, yard waste or construction and demolition debris, and you must show a City utility bill to get the credit.[4]
- After a storm, place storm debris curbside without blocking the road or storm drains, separated into vegetative debris, construction debris, bulky items, electronics and appliances.[2]
Tallahassee trash pickup schedule
- Garbage and recycling are each collected once a week, and the city has an online lookup of your pickup schedule by address.[1]
- The city mails a printed Waste Management Customer Service Guide with the Red/Blue week calendar by January 1 each year, and the calendar is also online.[1]
- Put containers behind the curb the night before or by 6:30 a.m. on service day, no earlier than the day before, and bring them back by the day after service.[2]
- Keep carts at least 3 feet from obstacles and each other with handles facing away from the curb; extra bags left beside the container are not picked up.[2]
- Customers who get three notices of violation for cart placement are placed on Premium Service for at least one year.[2]
- If your service day falls on or after a city observed holiday, pickup may come one day later.[1]
- City Utilities observe New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Emancipation Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Election Day, Thanksgiving and the day after, and Christmas and the day after.[5]

Drop off center
Leon County Solid Waste Management Facility (Apalachee Parkway)
Run by: Leon County Solid Waste Management runs the facility, and the county says the landfill is just one of its functions.[9]

- City of Tallahassee residents pay $50.18 per ton for yard debris.[8]
- City residents can bring up to four tires free, then pay $180 per ton, with oversized tires at $500 per ton.[8]
Accepted
- The facility still takes tires, clean yard waste (no plastic bagged yard waste), wood debris, electronics, recycling and household hazardous waste.[9]
Not accepted
- Bulk items and recycling from City of Tallahassee residents are not accepted, and the county directs them to Marpan.[8]
- Class One household garbage from City of Tallahassee residents is not accepted; the free garbage drop off is for unincorporated county residents.[8]

Transfer station
Leon County Transfer Station
Run by: Leon County runs a Transfer Station where garbage trucks unload household waste from Leon County homes and businesses for transport to a regional landfill.[9]
Address: The Transfer Station sits on 20 acres near the intersection of Capital Circle SW and Gum Road.[9]
Hours: It is open 3 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.[9]

Fees
- Commercial Class One garbage costs $71.25 per ton and requires a transfer station permit.[8]
Rules
- The Transfer Station is only for commercial and governmental haulers such as Waste Pro, the City of Tallahassee or Florida State University; businesses with regular large loads can ask about permits at 606-1840.[9]
- Garbage from the Transfer Station is trucked about 85 miles west to the Springhill Regional Landfill in Campbellton.[9]
Hazardous waste disposal in Tallahassee
- The city does not pick up household hazardous waste, and it should never go at the curb or in your bin.[2]
- The city guide sends residential hazardous waste to the county drop off site at 1800 N. Blair Stone Road, open Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.[2]
- Leon County's Hazardous Waste Center services are free for all Leon County households, including city residents.[10]
- The city guide says to take medical needles to the Florida Department of Health at 1515 Old Bainbridge Road and unused prescriptions to the Tallahassee Police Department, 234 E. 7th Avenue.[2]
- Household hazardous waste is also accepted at the city's twice yearly Cash for Trash events.[4]

Accepted
- It takes household chemicals and cleaners, aerosols, light bulbs, electronics such as computers, TVs and phones, and alkaline, rechargeable, watch and car batteries.[10]
- Garage items such as motor oil, antifreeze, pool chemicals and pesticides are accepted, with gasoline and paint each limited to 15 gallons.[10]
Not accepted
- Styrofoam, medical waste, prescription drugs and radioactive waste are not accepted.[10]
- Only 1 pound and 20 pound propane cylinders are taken; larger propane tanks, oxygen and other gas cylinders and scuba tanks should go back to the supplier.[10]

- Businesses and other agencies cannot use the drop off sites but can call (850) 606-1803 for an appointment at the center.[10]
Hazardous waste drop off
Leon County Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Site (Blair Stone Road)
Run by: Leon County runs a second household hazardous waste drop off site meant for residential household hazardous waste only.[11]

Accepted
- It takes used motor and cooking oil and antifreeze in containers, household chemicals, paints, fluorescent bulbs up to 4 feet, batteries, computers, laptops and TVs up to 32 inches.[11]
Not accepted
- Flammables such as fuel and paint thinner, TVs over 32 inches, appliances, tools, medications, biohazardous waste, tires and ammunition are not accepted.[11]
Rules
- Commercial and nonprofit entities may not use this site.[11]
Check with the city first
- Leon County's facilities do not accept bulk items or household garbage from city residents, so use your Red or Blue week pickup or a paid special pickup for furniture and junk.
- Leon County's own pages list different weekday and Saturday hours for the Apalachee Parkway facility, so call (850) 606-1800 before a Saturday trip.
- Leon County's site showed a Tropical Storm Isaias community brief on Oct. 8, 2026, so check city and county pages for storm debris rules and schedule changes before setting anything out.
